I am so excited to be bringing you this book review today! Today, I'm going to be talking about The Silent Stars Go By by Sally Nicholls.
This book was very kindly sent to me by Andersen Press - along with a few other little treats - in exchange for a review, but I would like to stress that the fact that I was gifted this book does not sway my review in any way. All opinions are my own.
Now, on with the review...
Here is the synopsis for The Silent Stars Go By:
Three years ago, Margot's life was turned upside down when her fiance, Harry, went missing in action on the Western Front. Worse, she was left with a devastating secret which threatened to ruin her life and destroy the reputation of her family. As a respectable vicar's daughter, Margot has had to guard that secret with great care ever since, no matter how much pain it causes her.
Now it's Christmas 1919, and Margot's family is gathering back home in the vicarage for the first time since the end of the Great War. And miraculously Harry has returned, hoping to see Margot and rekindle their romance. Can Margot ever reveal the shocking truth to the only man she has ever loved?
I feel like it's going to be very hard to write this review, saying what I truly thought of it and why without giving too much of the plot away. I will say straight away that I really enjoyed it though, despite not being able to give too much away without spoiling the storyline.
When I was sent this book, it came with a selection of little parcels to open as I read the book. Each little envelope and bag had a numbered sticker to match up with a page number from the book.
The little treats ranged from copies of letters sent between characters in the book to a bag of boiled sweets. It was a nice treat each time I reached the point of opening a little parcel, almost like a reward for reading!
Anyway, back to the book! I found this an incredibly enjoyable, easy-flowing read. It was moreish in the fact that I couldn't put it down at times (until I realised it was a work night and I shouldn't still be awake reading at midnight when I had to be up in six hours!)
I really connected with the characters and was rooting for them and their situation from the very beginning. I say the very beginning because I clocked what was going on pretty early on and I felt pretty smug when I realised my suspicions were correct. I'm almost never right about that sort of thing!
It was definitely a cosy, evening read - perfect for these chillier near-winter evenings now that the nights are drawing in and all I want to do is curl up with a cup of hot chocolate and a book or have a long, relaxing read in the bath.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants that cosy Christmas feel already and enjoys anything a little historical, like Downton Abbey.
Thank you again to Andersen Press for sending me this book - I loved it!
