Book Review: The Secret Ocean by Amy Grimes

I love a bright, colourful picture book, so when this landed through my letterbox - courtesy of Scholastic - I was incredibly excited. I knew from the moment that I opened it and saw the cover, this book was going to be a popular one with children of all ages - even my Year 6 class.

Ever since I took this book into my classroom, it has not been back on the shelf. It has just been passed from child to child. Every time someone goes to put it back, another pupil goes "Ooh, can I have that one now?" It's such a joy to see.

The Secret Ocean - along with the other books in this Secret series - is a story-based picture book that encourages you to look deeper into the illustrations to spot the wonders of the sea.

I could honestly spend hours looking at this book, with its beyond beautiful illustrations and the story they tell. If you have a child with a particular interest in sea animals of the ocean, then I highly recommend this book.

Amy Grimes has created the most beautiful illustrations within this book. I have attached one of my favourite images below, which is on her website. Anyone who knows me well, knows I love a narwhal. The story goes that until I saw them on a David Attenborough documentary about five years ago, I thought they were mythical creatures. My heart when I realised they were real beings - I'll never forget that feeling!

I thought I would also show you the other books in the Secret series. First, we have The Secret Forest. I don't own this one yet but I have added it to my "to buy" list.

Followed by The Secret Mountain, which is a popular choice in my classroom, even with Year 6 pupils.

Then we have The Secret Jungle, which is on my list of books to buy soon as the cover is so beautiful and vibrant.

The whole series looks incredible and I definitely need to purchase the two that I don't have yet. I think they are fantastic for sharing and exploring together, whether you are a parent reading it with a child or a couple of children just sharing a story together, spotting various things within the illustrations.

Thank you again to Scholastic for gifting me this stunning book in exchange for an honest review. It is greatly appreciated.
