Book Review: My Body, My Rules by Nicki Esler Gill & Dasha Riley

I love an empowering, informative message portrayed through picture books for young children. It doesn't need to be heavy or too deep but it's great to see good values and behaviours demonstrated through the joy of reading.

Today, I am reviewing My Body, My Rules - a picture book that aims to introduce younger readers to body boundaries and consent in a lighter manner.

This book gives this information in a fun, rhythmic way through well-written rhymes from Nicki Esler Gill. Many of these rhymes are written as questions too, which is more engaging for a reader or listener as they feel they are being spoken to.

These rhymes are paired with stunning, colourful illustrations by Dasha Riley. You can see a couple of example pages below and appreciate the beautiful pictures and a sneak peek at the story:

This book is a great resource for engaging young readers in important conversations about physical touch and what to do if you are uncomfortable.

The story uses relatable, realistic scenarios to communicate examples of physical touch, including hugs, tickles and playing games, so children will engage with situations they are familiar with or are likely to experience.

Overall, I really love this book and I would definitely recommend it to parents and primary teachers. It is listed as suitable for children aged 2 and up. Nicki Esler Gill and Dasha Riley have done a fantastic job with this book, making it appealing yet informative.

Thank you again to Scholastic for gifting me this beautiful book in exchange for an honest review. It is greatly appreciated.
