Book Review: Worry Boots by Lisa Thompson & Aysha Awwad

With the start of the new school year creeping up for us here in the UK, I thought this was the perfect time to review this picture book which focuses on that first-day-at-school feeling.

This book - Worry Boots - is described as a "first-day-at-school picture book like no other" and "a gentle, encouraging book for parents to help their children" with school anxiety.
Here is the synopsis for Worry Boots:

As Connie and Mum make their way to the bus stop for Connie's first day at school, they realise that their journey is going to be very unusual.

Why? Because there is something surprising in Connie's shoe! And that means she can't possibly go to school until she's sorted it out...

This is a debut picture book from Lisa Thompson, who has previously had children's novels published, such as The Goldfish Boy and The Day I Was Erased. Her children's novels are great so I had high expectations for this picture book. And yes, they were definitely met!

I love a picture book with a point or deeper message. This book deals with that first-day anxiety that many children experience. I think it's important that books address issues like this in a way children can relate to. This means they are more likely to discuss their worries with someone they trust and can be reassured and have any concerns put to rest.

I have to mention the beautiful illustrations in this book. Aysha Awwad has done a fantastic job with this book. I have attached a few pages below so you can truly appreciate the stunning artwork:

Overall, I think this is a fantastic book and is most prominent now as we move into a new academic year, which will be the first year of school for many little ones. This book would even be helpful for those who have already started school but might have that "going back" anxiety for many reasons. Even as an adult, I still get it too! But I know it's an excitement deep down but the unknown and new faces can make you feel a bit wobbly. Hopefully, my new class aren't too worried about having me this year!

Thank you again to Scholastic for gifting me this beautiful book in exchange for an honest review. It is greatly appreciated.
