A Day Out at Colchester Zoo

Earlier this month, Cameron and I visited Colchester Zoo. I will say this trip was mostly for Cameron because he has been mentioning going to the zoo for over a year (pretty much since we left Colchester Zoo on our last visit!)

We finally decided to go while we're off for the summer holidays and we picked one of the sunniest, warmest days to go which was lovely - except for the walking but it meant I didn't have to go to the gym that day!

We took some great photos and saw almost every animal we went to see with the exception of the tigers. We saw the bushes moving, so we know one was there, but we didn't catch a glimpse unfortunately.

I always love seeing the chimps and sea lions but my favourite animal at Colchester Zoo has to be the orangutans. We watched them climb around outside with hessian sacks over them for a while and then they all seemed to go to different parts of the enclosure for a nap under their sacks. It was incredible to see!

The meerkats, which are a favourite of both Cameron and I, were also on top form when we visited. You can see them in some of our photos further down this post. They were lounging, sitting and digging, as well as darting about from being in the sun to the shade.

We also love the otters. They are such little characters and you can always rely on them to be playful and entertaining when we visit. Again, they didn't disappoint as they played in the water and came up to the glass to say hello. Check out our photos below.

Cameron's all-time favourite are the red pandas but he also loves the elephants. We were lucky enough to catch the 'elephant encounter' talk which was so interesting. We learned that elephant tusks are extensions of their incisor teeth that never stop growing and baby elephants don't know what their trunks are for when they're born and learn through experimenting and watching older elephants to learn what they're useful for. We watched the keepers feed two of Colchester Zoo's four elephants - Tanya and Opal - who you can see in the photos below.

Here are some of the photos we took during our trip:

We did see lots of other amazing animals but some were hard to take photos of so we just enjoyed the moment of seeing them. For example, a red panda came out of his little house for food and then nipped back inside several times, the orangutans were playing under hessian sacks so wouldn't have been seen in photos and the chimps were mostly sleeping.

It was a wonderful day out and so lovely to support the care of these animals both at Colchester Zoo and with charity donations to various projects in the wild.

If you want to visit Colchester Zoo, you can book your tickets online here. It's currently their 60th anniversary so there are different things going on to celebrate too.

If you would like to show your support for the work that Colchester Zoo do, you can make a donation, book an experience day or adopt and animal here.

Have you visited Colchester Zoo? What is your favourite animal there?
