Book Review & Preview Extract | She is Fierce Blog Tour

Hi guys! I'm so excited to be a part of the She Is Fierce blog tour today and share with you my thoughts on this beautiful book.

She Is Fierce is a collection of Brave, bold and beautiful poems by women.

I will be reviewing it in this post, but first I have a preview extract from the book for you...

Here is poem that I am very lucky to be able to share with you from She Is Fierce:

This Poem...
Elma Mitchell

This poem is dangerous: it should not be left
Within the reach of children, or even of adults
Who might swallow it whole, with possibly
Undesirable side-effects. If you come across
An unattended, unidentified poem
In a public place, do not attempt to tackle it
Yourself. Send it (preferably, in a sealed container)
To the nearest centre of learning, where it will be rendered
Harmless, by experts. Even the simplest poem
May destroy your immunity to human emotions.
All poems must carry a Government warning. Words
Can seriously affect your heart.

I hope you liked that first look at one of the poems included in this brilliant collection. It was one of many of my favourite poems in the book, which I will now be reviewing...

She Is Fierce is a powerful collection of 150 poems written by women. From the ancient world right up to today, it includes stunning poems on friendship, resistance, protest, body image, mental health, nature, joy, love and more from some incredible poets. From suffragettes to school girls, from spoken word superstars to civil rights activists, from aristocratic ladies to kitchen maids, these are the voices that deserve to be heard.

First of all, the cover of this book is stunning. I love how simplistic it is but with two really strong, vibrant colours to make it eye-catching and match the feeling of the word "Fierce" in the title.

I love that Ana Sampson, who put this collection of beautiful poems together, dedicated it to her daughters as well. It's such a lovely touch to dedicate something that she has worked so hard to put together to them. It was also nice to read the Introduction, telling the reader why this book is so important.

One feature of this book that I adored was how it was divided up into sections that all had such depth and meaning. From Roots and Growing Up to Freedom, Mindfulness and Joy, and from Nature to Society, Fashion and Body Image, these different subjects are all covered in detail with a range of well-written poems.

There is such a wide variety of poetry topics in this book, but there is also a great range of female poets from classic authors to modern day women. I loved the mix of different women and how well their poems complimented each other in each section.

As I have already said, I do have so many favourite poems from this book but I thought I would list a few favourites below...

  • To Make a Homeland by Amineh Abou Kerech
  • Thirteen by Kate Tempest
  • Valentine by Carol Ann Duffy
  • Lines Composed in a Wood on a Windy Day by Anne Bronte
  • Stanzas by Emily Bronte
  • Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou
  • Rosa Parks by Jan Dean
  • Remember by Christina Rossetti

Ana Sampson has done a brilliant job of compiling this anthology of fantastic female-written poems. I'll definitely be checking out other books by Ana in the future, but I certainly recommend this one.

Do you have a favourite female poet?
