Book Review: Wilde Women by Louise Pentland
Saturday, 17 August 2019
I have loved reading Louise Pentland's books from the very beginning. I reviewed her first book, Wilde Like Me, before its initial release, as well as the second book in the series, Wilde About the Girl (thanks to the publishers for those opportunities, I felt so special to be able to read them before their release dates). So when I heard that this third book, Wilde Women, was going to be the last in the series, and the end of Robin Wilde's adventures, I was both excited to see what happened next with her and her daughter, friends and family, and scared to see it all come to an end.
So, here's my review of Wilde Women...
First of all, I did a Twitter read-along, so if you're interested in that then you can read over it here.
Just like in Wilde About the Girl, this third and final instalment follows Robin Wilde over a period of time. This time we see her juggling being a single mum to a hilarious little girl, having a man in her life, more responsibility at work, an anxious friend with a newborn baby and so much more. Robin is the kind of character who is always there for other people and is constantly trying to make sure everyone else is alright before even considering herself. She's just such a helper and a giver that she doesn't slow down, yet she loves it and would do anything for her little girl, her family and her friends.
My favourite character - as always - is Lyla, Robin's daughter. She just comes out with some fantastic lines that had me laughing so hard that I forgot what I'd read prior to that comment and had to go back to reread the previous page to get back on track. She's brilliant and a pure joy to read about. It's also Robin's reactions to Lyla's outbursts that make it extra special, whether that's her verbal responses or her internal, sarcastic, embarrassed voice. It's just so well-written.
The storyline was interesting, if you enjoyed the way the story worked in the previous books then you will like this one as it follows a very similar path and structure. It flows very easily which meant I found it hard to put down. I could've probably read it all in one sitting had I not started it late in the evening the night before I was going away for a couple of days.
I also really like how these books cover some issues that are sometimes not talked about enough, either because some people feel they shouldn't talk about them or their uncomfortable topics. These books have mentioned single parenthood, money, adoption, women supporting women, miscarriage, difficulty with conception, postnatal depression and so much more. It is so good to see some of these issues being raised in fiction. Maybe it will make them easier to talk about in the real world too.
Overall, these books have been such happy, easy reads for when I've needed a pick-me-up, whether it's to read about Robin's sarcastic internal thoughts as she deals with difficult characters or some of the hilarious one-liners that Lyla comes out with. I hope to see more books from Louise in the future, whether she chooses to pick up Robin's story again, write about one of the side characters in more detail or write a whole new book with new characters to fall in love with.
Thank you, Louise. You have given me a funny, enjoyable book series that I know I will definitely come back to.
