20 Years of Harry Potter Magic

Happy 20th anniversary to Harry Potter! I can't believe it has been this long since the release of the first book in this fantastic, magical series.

I've always been a huge Harry Potter fan and I can still remember where I was when I first read each book and how it felt to fall in love with this world. I can also remember being woken up in the middle of the night by my parents, who presented me with the book that my Dad had been out to get at midnight. He did this a few times actually and every time they would wake me up, I'd get excited to have the book and then I'd be told to go to bed and that I could read it in the morning. What kind of parent wakes their bookworm child up in the early hours to show them their most anticipated book of the year, only to tell them they can't have it yet?! They actually expected me to sleep!

Anyway, now I'm 25 and I'm still a huge Potter fan!

I've done all of the quizzes on the Pottermore website to get sorted into my house and more. For anyone who is interested, here is what I got:

My Hogwarts house: I'm in Ravenclaw. I was pretty confident that I would be a Ravenclaw before I even took the quiz, so I was happy with this. That's why I purchased the Ravenclaw edition of their new hardback book (see the photo above).

My wand: A 14 1/2 inch Laurel wood wand with a unicorn hair core. It apparently has a slightly springy flexibility, it cannot perform a dishonourable act and the unicorn hair makes it the most faithful of wands.

My Patronus: A dolphin. I wasn't thrilled with the patronus of a dolphin, but there's nothing you can do to change it.

Which house are you in? Do you know your patronus? Take the quizzes on the Pottermore website here.

I thought I'd share my top five characters with you to celebrate twenty years of wizarding magic, not including Harry, Ron and Hermione. Just to be clear, these are my top five across all of the books, not just the first one.

So here are my top five characters, in reverse order:

5. Remus Lupin: I found it really hard to choose a fifth place. It was between Lupin and Sirius Black but I eventually settled on Lupin I loved him in Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban. I really enjoyed his teaching and I liked the surprise of him being a werewolf.

4. Luna Lovegood: Luna is - in a word - brilliant. She's a bit eccentric and peculiar, but that's what makes her so likeable. I could have put her a lot higher on this list but it was just so hard to choose.

3. Dobby: He's adorable and I cried so much when he was set free. Dobby was exactly how I imagined him to be when they made the films, which was even better.

2. Gilderoy Lockhart: I loved his character in the book, just because he was so different. But I loved him even more after seeing Kenneth Branagh portray him in the films. He's just a great character.

1. Severus Snape: When we went to the Harry Potter studios here in the UK I got Snape's wand as a souvenir. I just love the development of his character and how his story is shown at the end. Also, his line "Always" may only be one word, but it's the most memorable and heartbreaking of them all.

Who are your favourite characters?

I hope everyone is enjoying their Harry Potter evening, whether you're reading the book, watching the movie or playing a Harry Potter themed game. I know someone is having a Harry Potter themed baking night, which sounds fun!
