Book Review: The Unexpected Find by Toby Ibbotson

I feel very lucky to be able to bring you this book review today as I think that this could be a real hit in the world of children's fiction.
Here is the synopsis for The Unexpected Find:

William's mother is never around, but he doesn't mind so much because it means he can do what he likes.

Judy's dad has been away for months, searching for his friend who disappeared without a trace, and Judy's starting to wonder if he'll ever come back.

And Stefan... Well, Stefan has never met anyone like William or Judy before and, to be honest, he doesn't really know what on earth to make of either of them.

When three unexpected people find an unexpected connection, they have no idea of the epic journey that lies ahead. Which is probably lucky. After all, if they had've known, they might never have chosen to go through it all in the first place...

I found the storyline very interesting and very different to anything else I've read. The characters, their journeys and the settings all came together to create something truly unique. Speaking of journeys, I have to mention the travel involved in this book. I thought it was done so well and was such an incredible feature within the story. Some of my favourite parts where whilst they were on the road.

All of the characters stood out to me. No one appeared as a minor character and, at the same time, no one was really the sole main character. They were so well developed and interwoven with each other that they just become part of a whole rather than separate lives. I have to take a moment to mention the character of William. As someone who works in a primary school, and have done so for nine years, I had a special connection with him. I thought the way he was described and how relatable he will be for some children was brilliant and I was so happy to see him progress throughout this book. It truly was inclusive and very inspiring.

The writing was very addictive. I read this book in only two sittings: one afternoon sat in the glorious Good Friday sunshine and one evening curled up in bed. The pacing was perfect, giving time really connect with the characters but also moving it along when it could have staying in one place for a bit longer. I think Toby Ibbotson has a true talent for writing and I can't wait to see what comes next!

Thank you to the publisher for gifting me this advanced copy. As always, the thoughts and opinions shared in this review are my own and I am never swayed by the fact that I have been sent the book.

The Unexpected Find is out on June 6th.
